This spectacular kit was the fourth release from Fine Molds (or Finemolds as some say) of Japan. The Slave One kit was supposed to come first, but many delays made Fine Molds release this one first. Like their other kits, the injection molded plastic had plenty of crisp detail. The parts were all precision engineered and fit together perfectly with only some minor seams around the middle of the wings and where the two cockpit sections came together. I started by assembling and painting the interior as per the instructions. This went quick and easy. After that I closed up the cockpit body, top, bottom and rear. I also assembled the wings but left the panels out. Like their TIE Fighter release, the "solar" panels are made separate pieces to facilitate painting. The body and wings were airbrushed with a custom paint mixture that includes Light Sea Gray, Ford Light Engine Blue, Intermediate Blue and Insignia Blue. I just kept mixing until I found a color that I really liked. For most of my TIE ships I use a straight from the bottle color called "Bluebell", but I was tired of this color and decided to mix one up from scratch. After this was done, I did the detail painting. The instructions point out what areas to paint what colors. Although they suggest Neutral Gray, for the TIE Interceptor I would suggest a darker color like Euro I Gray or German Gray. In looking at studio model reference pictures, I found their suggested colors just too light. After these were done, I applied the decals and used SolvaSet to fuse them to the surface and help them lay flat. After all this, I sprayed a gloss coat all over the craft to prepare for weathering. Once dry, I used a wash of water-based black and dark gray to help accent the detail and bring out the panel lines. Once this was dry, I airbrushed on a final matte overcoat. To finish it off I installed the solar panels and added the cockpit window. Overall this was an awesome kit. Although there were a few problems with the instructions and I noticed a few small details missing, it was still an awesome kit. I can't put Fine Molds down for the extremely high quality Star Wars kits they are releasing. I got this kit direct from Japan for about $25.
