This is another great kit from SMT that deals with the Expanded Universe. This craft was seen pursuing Han Solo on Nar Shadda in the comic Dark Empire. It has also been featured in numerous Star Wars games as well as books. Alfred Wong took this material and made it into a really cool kit that stands out from the rest. The detail on this kit is great. I was able to identify several X-wing parts used in the building of the kit and even a 3-liter soda bottle cap for the main thruster engine! The casting is very crisp and well done, as is expected of SMT. Construction was very simple. There weren't too many small parts to fumble with so that was good. One thing that I liked was that the exposed engine areas underneath the craft were inserts that could be painted separately and then inserted. There were no major problems assembling this ship. I had a little trouble aligning the tail fins right, but that's not big deal. Unfortunately the cockpit canopy doesn't fit exactly right so that took a little working, but again it was a minor problem. I had a few copies made out of clear styrene by my friend Mark from Zarkus Model Kits so I was able to experiment with these. He offered to make me these copies because the original from SMT was made of clear resin and was foggy. I put a lot of work into the cockpit area so I wanted it visible. Speaking of that, on to painting. If you can see, I made the pilot alien. I was tired of doing humans so I made a greenish-blue skinned dude with red eyes. A real pirate looking guy since the Cloakshape is often used by mercs and pirates. I decided to paint the ship black because I don't really have too many all black ships and I thought it would look cool. It seemed logical for the subject matter. As for the big logo emblazoned across it, I originally wanted searing flames around the sun area in the center, but that proved too difficult. The rest wasn't too hard. I added some more white accents around the ship in the forms of stripes and then weathered the ship heavily with grays, blacks and rust. Unfortunately a lot of it is hard to see in this picture, oh well. I got this kit directly from SMT for a special price that I can't mention. ;) Unfortunately this kit is no longer available as SMT has ceased production of all Star Wars related kits.
