This kit is kind of an updated and improved version of the original AMT A-wing. SMT added some details and scribed the panel lines in. It's probably one of the less popular SMT kits what with some of the awesome stuff they are coming out with. There were a few problems assembling it unfortunately. The thin wings kept snapping off the engines because it was cast in resin and resin can be brittle at that thickness. The two body halves didn't fit together too good as well. These problems weren't all that bad though. The kit looks great, so it doesn't really matter. I painted it a lot like my other one, just a little more accurate to the original studio model. I based it in a flat white and used a rich, dark red for squadron colors. I picked out panels in varying shades of gray using studio photo references. I washed it in flat black to darken it and make weathering. Overall this kit didn't quite match up with the rest of SMT's great big kits. The original cockpit canopy was pretty foggy as you can see in the first couple picks. To solve this I had my good friend Mark from Zarkus Model Kits vacuform me a new one out of clear styrene. But that is ok, don't let it stop you from picking one up. Secretly, I think it was released because of Alfred Wong's (the guy who made the masters) unnatural obsession with A-wings. :) Alfred, if you are reading this you know what I mean. I got this kit directly from SMT. Unfortunately this kit is no longer available as SMT has ceased production of all Star Wars related kits. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
